Level 1: The graffiti in Romania — ugly and anti-Semitic — was meant to shock. It was written on August 8th, 2018 on the wall of the childhood home of a man: Elie Wiesel. The graffiti read, “Nazi Jew lying in hell with Hitler”. The act of vandalism occurred months after Romania’s Parliament passed a law in June to prevent episodes of anti-Semitism. The law imposes prison sentences between three months and 10 years for those found guilty. The police said that they had identified three teenagers as responsible.
